Mediator Preparation: The Basics

This is a workshop designed for lawyers who desire to develop skills in "interest-based bargaining."  Participants will explore step-by-step the process of mediation and specifically the role of the mediator in the process.  Participants will explore themes common to all disputes: Why conflicts escalate; why mediation works, the best techniques to diffuse anger, coming to an agreement, and problems encountered in mediation.   Distinctions will be made among the implementation of mediation in family, commercial, employment, and tort settings.  The mediator trainee will dissect and evaluate segments of taped mediations and will participate in a mock mediation at the culmination of the course.  This course may be offered through the web-based system, in-person, or a combination of the two.
